What’s your favorite color?
All of them…although purple is a struggle sometimes.
Where is the name “Balin” from?
It’s actually from the book, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. Balin was one of the original thirteen dwarves that sets out with Bilbo on his grand adventure. He also shows up briefly in the first book of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story goes that me mum, bless ‘er ‘art, was reading The Hobbit while pregnant with me and took a liking to the name. So there you go.
Where are you located?
We can be in all places when needed, but are currently located in New York, NY. Stop by and say ‘Hi.’
Do you like animals?
Yes, we love animals. But not sea monsters. Never sea monsters. No one likes sea monsters except maybe their mothers. Then again, maybe not.
But do you like kids?
Yes. I even got one recently. She is a bit unruly and definitely Presidential.
What do you like to do when you’re not designing?
Travel, build/ride bicycles, make art, write, read, listen to music, hunt sea monsters — the usual.
Will you be my friend?
Of course, everyone needs friends. Feel free to connect on The Twitters, Instaham, LinkedIn…
Who are your design influences?
The classic designers are an inspiration — the Bauhaus School, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Paula Scher, Dieter Rams — but less traditional sources are equally inspiring – furniture designers Ray & Charles Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi and artists like Miro, Calder, Martin Puryear, and Ruth Asawa.
Do you do pro bono work?
Possibly, for the right project and time permitting. Let’s talk.
Do you do spec work?
No. Never. Why don’t you just punch me in the face next time?
Why do you tend to use the royal ‘we’?
No person is an island. Projects are done by teams. I often work with variety of people across a variety of specialties. Call them spontaneous brain trusts. Call them think tanks. Call them collective genius. Hence the royal ‘we’.
How do I ask you a question that I don’t see here?
Just drop me a note. I’ll talk your ear off.
